January the first brings two traditions… Throwing up in a taxi, followed by resolutions to get fit and healthy.
Most of these resolutions fail before February.
Because in the spirit of things, most people opt for rather considerable lifestyle changes… They go from microwave pizza to weighing and measuring broccoli; they go from 4 hours of TV per night to jogging in the driving rain; they go from tasty Mojitos to organic spinach smoothies and juice cleanses...
These significant and dramatic changes are simply not sustainable... Not unless you have a gun to your head.
Now, I’m not saying that self improvement is a waste of time; far from it… Consider this: you are the product of 4 billion years of blind, unthinking evolution. You are here now after an impossibly long series of births and deaths, triumphs and failures, all set against a background of continuous violence: cometary impacts, volcanic eruptions, bitter conflicts…
Your body is a beautiful machine - a product of billions of years of natural selection...
If you can wrap your head around that then I think you’ll agree that a commitment to self improvement is the bare minimum of what is required of us all.
So where does that leave us?
If significant and dramatic changes are not sustainable, then clearly a smarter approach is needed. A smarter, sustainable approach based on completing one or two small tasks each week.
Here is my challenge to everyone.
For the first week of January: - Drink 1 pint of plain water every day - you are welcome to drink more, but never less. - Book into at least one Crossfit class - nothing is simpler, all you have to do is show up.
Do you want to know the ins and outs of these steps? To be honest, you really don’t need to - just know that if you start on these small, easily achievable steps, by summer you will have built something truly special - a beautiful machine, worthy of its incredible ancestry. And if you don’t start, then by summer you will likely be exactly where you were last summer…
The time is going to pass anyway...
