3 Ways You’re Getting Your Pants Pulled Down By The Health And Fitness Industry...
Fitness: [Where’s The Skill?]
Whatever your chosen physical activity may be, it should contain elements of skill... I’ll try to keep this brief…
If you’ve been training for four years and you have little to show for it, you’ve not just had your pants pulled down, but you’ve had the rug pulled out from under you and the wool pulled over your eyes…
There’s so much more to fitness and movement than just running around like an a******* or doing endless, mindless reps…
Skill is what bridges the gap between your capacity to move and your ultimate movement potential... Skill is what allows total bodily freedom.
Are you just peddling on an exercise bike? Just trying to lose or gain weight? Running around a field and doing sit ups? Following choreographed routines or dancing to a DVD?
Don’t limit yourself.
Pick a training modality / movement practice where measurable progress in all ten general physical skills can be made… Don’t get conned into practicing something with a built in dead end…
Nutrition: [If Something’s Too Good To Be True…]
While not technically the health and fitness industry, this is still a good example of what to watch out for… This popped up on my newsfeed yesterday:
“For anyone trying to cut back on sugar but still have a few treats we have a Raw Chocolate and No Refined Sugar Desserts class running at our cookery school this Wednesday - Raw Chocolate, Rocky Road, Key Lime Pie, Chocolate Mousse, Goji Pudding, Healthy Gummies”
I dug up the ingredients for Paleo Rocky Road…
- ¾ cup coconut oil - 1 cup cacao - ½ cup rice malt syrup (you can also use raw honey or maple syrup) - 2/3 cup almond meal - ½ cup chopped macadamia nuts - ½ cup dried goji berries - ½ cup coconut flakes - Himalayan salt
That’s a lot of calorie dense fat, and a lot of calorie dense sugar…
Just because raw honey is called raw honey and not sugar doesn’t mean you should eat half a cup of it in one go… And “no refined sugar”? They aren’t lying, there’s no refined sugar in it, but there’s still half a cup of f***ing syrup or honey in it… Which is sugar...
I’m not saying don’t eat it, because I definitely would; I am saying that “no refined sugar” doesn’t mean sugar free, and that someone looking to lose weight will find it just as hard to do so eating “Paleo Rocky Road” as they would eating Oreos…
If something sounds too good to be true, they are likely trying to pull your pants down…
Supplements: [Proprietary Blend…]
It is safe to assume that any bottle, can, tub or whatever else with proprietary blend printed on it is pulling your pants down in a big way…
If you know anything about nutrition - absolutely anything at all - you’ll know that anything with proprietary blend is used to disguise the fact that what is in your bottle, can or tub contains very little of whatever expensive ingredients are listed… As an example, the photo below [bottom left] has a premium proprietary blend of 2320mg, the vast majority of which will be the cheapest ingredient: probably the natural lemon flavour...
It is ineffective... Don't waste your money.
Yes, sure, you can believe that proprietary blend is used so competitors don’t know the exact ratios used, but believing this means you believe a large company that doesn’t know you values your performance more than their profits…
For examples, see BSN, FitAID, Progenex, and pretty much any nutrition / supplement company geared towards performance…
