When it comes to practice, skill development and mastery, time is not created equal...
In this scenario, you can choose any skill you like: freestanding handstand holds, double unders, piano, whatever…
Anna, Bettie and Charlotte are all beginners and they have all accumulated 4 hours of total practice this week.
Anna practiced 4 hours while daydreaming about the gardner.
Bettie practiced 4 hours while focusing completely on the task at hand.
Charlotte clenched her teeth and practiced as hard and as fast as she could with no regard to what her practice looked / sounded like.
I don’t need to tell you who would be better at the end…
Here’s the deal… The length of time you have been practicing something means nothing. The length of time you have been focusing on perfect execution means everything.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand the appeal of high skill conditioning… Muscle Ups and Snatches, that’s the sexy stuff… But it only looks sexy if you’ve mastered the movements.
I can’t stress that enough, so I’ll say it again: it only looks sexy if you’ve mastered the movements.
Without mastery it just looks like 12 - 9 - 6 reps of Go F*** Yourself for time… Followed by two Neurofen for that shoulder problem you’ve been having lately…
Practice with focus and patience, address any mobility and/or strength deficits, work your way diligently through the progressions and I promise that not only will you get to the sexy stuff you will get there faster and you will arrive in one piece…
