Last week I had a delightful chat with an old friend of mine… The dude has been a personal trainer for almost four years now and to be blunt, he views CrossFit as all that is evil in the world.
“They have people doing all this weird stuff like muscle ups… No one needs f***ing muscle ups…”
He’s actually almost correct… In this sedentary culture - in a civilization that strives to reduce its movement down to the absolute minimum - does anyone NEED to do be able to haul their own bodyweight from underneath something to on top? Does anyone even need to squat? Or the ability to walk 3 miles without a break?
You need a muscle up as much as you need to see the Northern Lights, and you need the ability to walk 3 miles as much as you need to try hot chocolate in Switzerland… These things aren’t essential in this day and age, but they do offer incredible, immersive experiences; they offer challenges and exhilaration; they offer a means for growth and progress; they offer excitement and enrichment…
So yeah, no one NEEDS a muscle up, a solid power clean, or the ability to walk a short distance, but we don’t also NEED to be functional, sexy and physically capable of enjoying life… All things, I think, we’d all like to have… And we certainly don’t NEED f***ing Boxercise…
If you do want to be functional, sexy and physically capable of going out into the world and enjoying life, you’ll NEED some endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy… If you have other needs, then our training probably isn’t for you…
